Mobile apps
Does your business really need a mobile app?
How to choose between a responsive website, a progressive web app and a native app, based on how your customers will use it.

How often will customers open it?
An app earns its place on a phone when people use it often: ordering every week, tracking a delivery, checking a balance, booking a class. If most customers visit once to see your prices, they will not download anything. A fast website that works well on a phone serves them better.
Look at how customers reach you today. In Lebanon and the Gulf, many first contacts come through Instagram or WhatsApp links that open in a browser. A site that loads quickly from those links matters more than an app icon few people install.
What a progressive web app can do
A progressive web app, or PWA, is a website that can be added to the home screen, open full screen and keep some tasks working on a weak connection. It has one codebase, updates instantly and does not need app store approval.
Its limits depend on the device. Support for notifications and background tasks is fuller on Android than on iPhone, and many people never find the “Add to home screen” option. Check the features you need on the phones your customers actually use.
When a native app makes sense
A native app is the better choice when the product depends on the camera, Bluetooth, background location, in-app payments or notifications that must always arrive. It is also expected for products people use every day, such as banking, delivery or loyalty.
Plan for the extra work. Apps go through Apple and Google review, need updates when phone systems change, and usually need a website or admin panel behind them. Cross-platform tools lower the cost of building for iPhone and Android, but not the review and maintenance.
A sensible path
Many businesses start with a strong responsive website, watch how customers use it, and build an app once repeat use is clear. The data, accounts and back end built for the website can usually be reused by the app later.
What to take away
- Match the format to how often customers come back.
- A PWA covers many app-like needs with one codebase.
- Choose a native app for daily use or deep device features.
